In the summer issue of our “More Good News,” the young people who serve at Mass are given a well-deserved highlight.
Unfortunately, these days when people feel entitled to this or that, the intention to serve others suffers from many who only look for what they get from others. This even creeps into church life and the community of faith.
God created us to serve, not only to be served, if we follow the example of Jesus with the apron on washing the feet of his disciples.
We are set apart and given the task of serving in a culture that is self-serving and selfish. In serving others we are serving the Lord Himself. Remember, if you feed or care for or clothe the ones in need, you serve me, Matthew’s gospel says.
God has given each person talents, skills, energies and a willing heart. We are equipped to do good, not just for ourselves, but for others.
Volunteering in parish life, joining with glad spirits into the ministries of a parish household is important for the growth and future life of the church — your church. The healthy attitude of one who serves rules out the constant need for being thanked. The attitude of one who serves is rooted in the love of Christ who served us most powerfully on the cross — there’s challenge, inconvenience and even hardship at times.
Whether it is working at the summer festival, being in the choir or greeting folks at the door, teaching kids in Faith Formation — service brings unique joy and satisfaction.
We are most grateful for our servers at holy Mass.
